Process_Description:

This data was created by WSDOT's Rail, Freight and Ports Division and the GIS and Roadway Data Branch for planning purposes and to be used for locating features on the PCC system by milepost value. Milepost values were created by event placement against the LRS feature class using a spreadsheet listing milepost values for a given branch line.
Line segment numbers were assigned to the rail lines in Washington, prexisting route numbers assigned by Burlington Northern to lines owned by or formerly owned by BNSF Railway; Burlington Northern (BN); Great Northern (GN); Northern Pacific (NP); Spokane, Portland and Seattle (SP&S); Pacific Coast (PC); and Washington, Idaho and (WIM). Mainlines and former mainlines were assigned two-digit numbers by BN and predecessor lines. Branch lines were assigned three-digit numbers. Leading zeroes were added to the attribute table as needed to make all line segment numbers four-digits. These line segment numbers minus leading zeroes are shown on both right-of-way and track maps and (schematic) track charts.
Union Pacific did not use line segment numbers on their rail lines. In order to give these former UP lines a unique identifier, truncated names were assigned to these lines. These include HOOPER for the line that runs from Hooper Junction via Winona to Colfax, HOOPERS for the line from Colfax to Pullman, and PLEASANTV for the line from Winona through the Pleasant Valley to Thornton.
