Description: The bridges located in this data are listed in, determined eligible for listing in, have been nominated to, or are recommended eligible for the National Register for Historic Places. Those documented by, or for, the Historic American Engineering Record or the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation's Level 2, are identified as 'HAER'. Bridges labeled 'Interstate' are features of the Interstate System identifed by FHWA as being of exceptional national signifcance. WSDOT started evaluating bridges for historical significance in 1979. Since then WSDOT has evaluated bridges built through 1970. Like the 1979 evaluations, most of those evaluations are now decades old. WSDOT revisits these evaluations on an as-needed basis, depending upon a given bridge’s type. As bridges are lost to replacement and new materials and technology advance bridge engineering, the context for evaluation change thereby resulting in changes in the status of some bridges. This data is not static. It is continually updated on an as-needed basis. Bridge locations are represented as points on or adjacent to state routes in Washington. This data layer does not include all potential bridges that could, or should, be on the list. This data layer does not include locally or privately owned historic bridges in Washington. This list is subject to change and does not include railroad bridges, bridges built exclusively to carry water or sewer pipes nor tunnels.
