snippet: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires a review of highway urban and urbanized areas after each decennial US Census. For Census 2020, the Census Bureau determined boundaries for urban areas with 5,000 or more people or 2,000 housing units, which could have fewer than 5,000 people. Highway urban areas only include those Census Bureau defined urban areas with 5,000 or more people. Highway urban areas must include all area within Census Bureau defined urban areas but can and usually contain area beyond the Census Bureau defined boundaries. Although the Census Bureau no longer distinguishes between urban and urbanized areas as of Census 2020, FHWA does, with urban areas having populations between 5,000 and 49,999 and urbanized areas having 50,000 and above. This data set is used for identification of Urban Areas and as a reference layer for geographic information systems at WSDOT.
