Description: Polygons represent the Metropolitan Planning Areas (MPAs) for Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs). The establishment of a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is mandated by 23 CFR § 450.310. MPOs are required by federal regulations for each highway urbanized area (population 50,000 or more) and are responsible for transportation planning within the MPA boundary. MPO and MPA boundaries are adjusted after each decennial US Census. Minor adjustments are sometimes made to MPA boundaries between decennial reviews.
